The Mars 2020 Perseverance rover has 6 wheels made of aluminum with titanium spokes. Each wheel has a diameter of 52.5 centimeters (20.7 inches). The wheels have a aggressive thread composed of cleats that help them maintain traction across sandy and rocky terrain and climb over obstacles up to 40 cm tall. (NASA,2019) According to Stefan Roschi (n.d.), Perseverance is equipped with brushless DC motors in its wheels and legs, allowing for the rover to travel 4.2 cm per second, which is a “standout performer” and the slow pace is energy efficient and consumes less than 200 watts (NASA, 2019). The rover is also equipped with a "rocker-bogie" system that distributes the weight of the rover equally over its 6 wheels, reducing tilt while driving over the uneven Martian terrain for better stability. (NASA, 2019)
